7:21a - LOC Accused of Withdrawing Job Offer After Applicant Reveals Gender Change
The Right Person for the Job - Library of Congress Accused of Withdrawing Job Offer After Applicant Reveals Gender Change, by Petula Dvorak. Washington Post, June 2, 2005.
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2005/06/01/AR2005060101777_pf.html
"The job candidate interviewing to be a terrorism research analyst at the Library of Congress seemed to have exceptional qualifications: a 25-year Army veteran and former Special Forces commander who spent a career hunting terrorists and often personally briefed the vice president, defense secretary or Joint Chiefs of Staff on sensitive operations. The interviews and salary talks went well for David Schroer. A job offer followed, and he accepted. Then the new employee brought up one last item: Once work began, the name would be Diane, not David. The job offer, Schroer said, was rescinded the next day." [More] (via LISNews)

7:24a - Harry and the Potters
Potter Was a Rolling Stone: The Hogwarts School of Rock, by Rachel Deahl. The Book Standard, May 27, 2005.
http://www.thebookstandard.com/bookstandard/news/publisher/article_display.jsp?vnu_content_id=1000937685
"Paul DeGeorge would never describe himself as an obsessed Harry Potter fan. Paul, [25], who works as a scientist for a vaccine manufacturer, moonlights as a Potter-styled rock star in his band, Harry and the Potters. The group--in which Paul plays guitar [as Harry Year 7] and his 17-year-old brother Joe plays keyboard [as Harry Year 5] (they both sing)--has played shows around the country and released two albums' worth of songs inspired by J.K. Rowling's bestselling series. ... The band has performed in over 30 libraries around the country, with plans to hit a few more on its upcoming summer tour. While the band provides a welcome, if somewhat raucous, presence at these shows, Paul says the unique venue offers young kids the rare chance to see live rock 'n' roll. ... Harry and the Potters is currently gearing up for its show at the Randhurst Mall in Mount Prospect, Ill., where a crowd of some 30,000 is expected to be on hand to celebrate the July 16 midnight release of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince." (Oh, just go look. It's not the same if I have to describe it.)

8:55a - Bloggers at ALA (Chicago)
Bloggers at ALA. It's all good ("a blog from 3 OCLC Online Computer Library Center staff"), May 26, 2005.
http://scanblog.blogspot.com/2005/05/bloggers-at-ala.html
OCLC is hosting a gathering at ALA on Sunday, June 26, starting at 5:30pm, in the OCLC Blue Suite (location TBD--ask at the OCLC booth). It's for "any libraryland bloggers attending ALA in Chicago, ... everyone who blogs that will be attending ALA...whether you blog about libraryland or knitting." Since that's the one day I'm going to ALA, I hope to be there. [More]
