6:48a Stuff, x 4
The fun stuff
Okay, I thought of a bunch of you (yeah, you, windrose and Havoc) when I saw this: "Mansfield Park and Mummies"
*dies, snortling into her teacup*
Also: watching SyFy's "Alice?" Like reading Gaiman during a bad LSD trip. Extra butter on the popcorn, and you may have fun although you probably won't respect yourself in the morning. Oh, and I want me a Hatter.
The not-so-fun stuff
Y'know, never mind. I make myself read the national/international news every day but if you don't, I'm not going to harsh your mood. Yerwelcome.
The book stuff
On the actual writing front, nailed down 2,900 new words yesterday, and we're into the first meeting between Bonnie and Wren. It's weird writing a scene you've written before, but infused with an entirely different mentality, not to mention being seen through the other side of the mirror.
Another character is starting to really get pushy about more page-time. My agent wants to know who's in charge here, me or the characters. The fact that she even has to ask is pretty much the answer right there.
The life stuff
Otherwise, my life is pretty much all about waiting: waiting for checks to arrive, waiting for people to get back to me with Y/N on projects, waiting for delivery people to arrive...
Have I mentioned recently how very bad I am about waiting?
Oh good, coffee's done. At least I'm not waiting on that any longer.

9:15p There will be wine one way or another!
Things have been going well for me the past couple of weeks. I had to work on Thanksgiving, but I did bake a batch of pumpkin/raisin bread squares and take them in to share. I've been slowly accumulating kumquats from my tree, and I have about 2/3 cup in the freezer so far. My homemade peppermint schnapps is continuing to mature, and though it started as a pale yellow-green color, it has darkened to a rich amber. That's certainly not the color I expected, though it's very pretty to look at.
This weekend I was able to arrange a swap to give me four days off in a row, from Friday to Monday. I used the opportunity to go visit Jenn in Sacramento. First I went to Concord, where she and her friend joined me for some shopping at used book stores. I wound up buying about ten cookbooks plus various novels. We had lunch at an Indian restaurant that had an absolutely scrumptious array of food at the buffet. We stuffed ourselves silly and left hoping that we had the recipes for some of the food in our cookbooks.
Next we headed out to go wine-tasting...or so we thought. We were following the map directions, but we couldn't seem to locate the street that was supposed to take us to the highway. We drove up and down the same road for half an hour before we figured out that the directions were written for someone starting on the road from the opposite direction, and we had to turn left instead of right as the map instructed. Finally we made it to Amador County and managed to visit three wineries before closing time. I bought a grand total of eight bottles.
I spent the night at Jenn's apartment, where we dined on cheese and crackers while watching Avatar. I spent the morning reading curled up on the couch with her two kitties keeping me warm. We had a breakfast of pumpkin waffles, followed by the final disc of Avatar, and then a deluxe sushi lunch that was quite amazing.
Carrying back eight bottles of wine, ten cookbooks, and six novels in my little overnight bag...now that was an adventure. I made it home all right, though now I have to get myself a wine rack.
This coming weekend I put myself open for overtime on Sunday, because I've floated up to the top 10% of the list and I want to sink back down. I've already spent the extra overtime pay by treating myself to a set of high-quality kitchen knives. I'm really enjoying my cooking experiments, and I think I should have good tools for all the chopping and slicing. Tonight's experiment was lentil soup with dried apricots from one of my new cookbooks, and it's pretty tasty.
Now I'd better get to bed, since it's back to work bright and early in the morning.

11:08p Snow!
On my lj, at least! Thank you, cordelia_v, fatfred, cincodemaygirl, and Anonymous for the snowflake cookies!
And yesterday, I finally achieved words on my Yuletide fic. 575! Now if can just do that every day until Yuletide, I might bring this thing in at something like the proper length.
Today may be a wash, though. I am procrastinating so hard, I just played a full game of Oregon Trail. (In which John, Ronon, Rodney and Teyla all died. I suppose it's a good thing I didn't use the Torchwood team instead. "JACK has died. JACK has died. JACK has died...")
Maybe there is inspiration, or at least motivation, at the bottom of this cup of eggnog. If nothing else, there is eggnog in it.

Watching Carrie Underwood special, and I just saw Mark Kanemura (from season 4 of So You Think You Can Dance, best routine Bleeding Love) He's one of the backup singers for the show (wearing the white shirt in the opening number). =) I've seen him in several more bits while I was locating that YouTube link. Go Marc!
even though this is called Carrie Underwood's Holiday Special I haven't seen anything holiday related yet. Guess I was expecting Christmas carols all over the place. Now I wonder if we'll even get 1.
(edit to correct name of singer)

6:20p AT&T: The Racist Phone Company
My brother pointed out this one as all kinds of racist:
(Incidentally, did you notice the number of times the little AT&T symbol of progressive bars shows up in the background as bits of architecture, or stacks of cups, or . . . ?)
My brother also mused whether the racism was purposeful or merely clueless. What racism?
"Every person holding a mobile device in this spot is white. Each become part of the plan to help tall whitey help po li'l black chil'. Meanwhile, the black folk are relegated to analog ignorance in every scene. Sure, Mr. Hansbrough's character hangs with some brothers, but they appear to be oblivious to his charitable act. One quick scene has a white woman showing her phone display to a black woman, as if to ask if she's seen the dog. The sista cluelessly shakes her head no.
"Eventually, the dog surfaces with three young people - two whites, one black. Guess who's transfixed by her mobile device? The white girl, of course. She got the Twitter update and immediately recognizes the dog! What's her black friend doing while the white girl solves the mystery? Petting the escaped dog and smiling her clueless ass off."
At first I was willing to put write it off as clueless racism, but after watching it a couple times more, I took it back. How often did this go through editing? How many eyes went over it? Images in commercials are never there by chance, as the "more bars" architecture in the same ad clearly demonstrates, and the image of a bunch of smart white people using their fast, hi-tech network to help a disadvantaged black child is simply too strong and too overt to be anything but on purpose.
AT&T: Racist phone company to the NBA.

6:13p Decorating, 2009
For Sunday we'd promised Maksim that we'd get the Yule tree, and so we did.
First we had to straighten up and arrange various bits of furniture and bring the boxes up from the basement. Then we went off to get a tree. This was lots easier with a van! We found The Perfect Tree at the farmer's market we usually go to and got it set up with minimal fuss. Decorating followed.
By now the boys are old pros at it. They set up the house decorations wile Kala and I did the lights, and then it was ornaments and other stuff. It all looks luvverly!

6:09p Saturday Date
On Saturday, Kala said to me, "We're going ooooouuuutt!" And so we did.
We abandoned the children (oh, the joys of having older offspring) and headed off into the wilds of Ann Arbor to hunt down food. The places we wanted to go were too expensive for a season in which you're buying presents, and the places we could afford to go didn't appeal. And it was cold! The thermometer read 35, but a killer wind tore the heat right out of you.
We ended up at Habana, a Cuban restaurant that was new to us. I had fish tacos, and Kala had a seafood enchilada, and both were very good.
From there, we processed across town to the comedy club in the basement of Seva. We enjoyed the show quite a lot. V. funny.
Then we scurried back across town to the parking structure to the car. It felt like midnight, but it was only 9:30! We thought about going somewhere else, but decided to head back home.
